Overview

Concern Worldwide works in five regions in Tanzania. Our work focuses on livelihoods and health, ensuring that people have dependable access to food and safe water.

Improved conditions for refugees

In one camp, home to 25,758 refugees, we have reduced water-borne diseases with safe water and improved sanitation. We have also focused on reducing the incidence of malaria by helping to limit mosquito breeding sites and promoting the use of mosquito-repellent plants.

Ensuring farmers get a better price

Our governance programme made considerable progress last year, particularly on the production and marketing of cashew nuts by poor farmers. Changes to the marketing process should ensure that farmers receive a better price for their cashew, and reduce the chances of exploitation by middlemen.

Participation in governance

Rights awareness training has encouraged poor and vulnerable citizens to participate in their own governance. Village committees have been established, and there is increased recognition of equal rights for all at the community level.

Concern will continue working closely with the Tanzanian government, advocating for prudent spending of the meagre resources available and for policies that genuinely benefit the country’s poorest people.

More achievements in Tanzania:

  • 77,647 people benefited from the effective implementation of water and environmental health plans
  • We have helped over 13,000 farmers to improve their harvests
  • We continue to address HIV and AIDS issues, working closely with the government and other organisations
