Overview
As post-war recovery continues in Liberia, Concern Worldwide has made positive strides in its transition from emergency work to longer-term development projects.
Working together
As well as working on livelihoods, HIV and AIDS and rehabilitating refugees, last year we formed part of a five-member consortium of non-government organisations.
The consortium’s objectives included delivering water facilities and training, promoting health and hygiene and managing rubbish. It has been hugely successful and may be used as a model for future NGO co-ordination.
Prize winning farmers
We helped 373 farmers improve their agricultural practices through 14 farm field schools. In December, 20 Concern-supported farmers won prizes at the National Agricultural Fair. They included first place prizes for best livestock, tuber, rice and most productive fishing group and third place prize for most productive female farmer.
We also provided 250 farmers, in three slum communities, with tools and seeds.
Health and hygiene
80,859 people benefited from our health programme in 2007. This programme promotes hygiene and HIV and AIDS awareness and also constructs latrines, wells and pipes and clears drains.
More achievements in Liberia:
- We helped 250 HIV-positive people to earn a living on a six-acre farm
- We rebuilt communities destroyed by 14 years of civil war, reconstructing roads, schools, health clinics and markets
- In August 2007, we distributed 2,472 mosquito nets, benefiting 350 pregnant women and 2,172 children
