Overview

In Angola, Concern works with rural communities that rely mostly on subsistence agriculture. The main focus of our work is helping these people improve their food production and farming techniques.

Escaping poverty

Concern is continuing to shift its focus from emergency relief to long-term development. The goal is to ensure people have the skills and expertise needed to escape poverty and break the cycle of dependency.

Providing guidance

One of our main achievements in 2007 was setting up 45 community management groups, which helped local people to get organised and advocate for their rights.

Educating teachers and students

We set up a distance learning project for 200 teachers, to increase the skill level of rural teachers. All the preparation work was completed, and everything put in place for the new academic year.

Video diary

The following video is an account of a recent evaluation trip to Angola undertaken by overseas department staff member Michael Hanley.

More achievements in Angola:

  • We distributed 805 goats to 407 people in 41 village credit schemes
  • This was the first year of our goats project, which aims to improve the lives of 4,500 poor households by providing livestock and training
  • In 57 villages we helped raise awareness of HIV and AIDS
  • 5,975 families each received 5kg of bean seed and 20g of carrot, onion and cabbage seeds
