Tsunami
The tsunami that struck countries around the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004 killed over 300,000 people and left over two million people homeless. Twelve countries were affected, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India the worst hit.

Concern responded quickly in India. It has been operational in the northwest of the country since the earthquake in Gujarat in 1999, and having teams already on the ground meant Concern was able to start emergency distributions quickly.
A Concern assessment team arrived in Sri Lanka on 29 December and, after initial assessments, began rehabilitation work in partnership with local organisations, including Project Galle 2005, Sewalanka, Rural Development Foundation and Women's Development Federation. The first task was the provision of basic supplies and the construction of transitional shelters, providing families with security and privacy. Now that immediate housing needs are being addressed, rehabilitation efforts are focussing on livelihood needs and the provision of fishing equipment.
In Indonesia, Concern's assessment began on the 1 January 2005. The first priority was to bury the people who were killed by the tsunami. A team of experienced aid workers were then deployed to distribute emergency supplies and assist survivors in the Internally Displaced People camps. The focus is now on longer-term assistance, particularly in the areas of education, housing, water supply and sanitation.
