Up and running for Concern
Thursday, 8 May 2008
Concern is delighted to have been selected as an official charity of the first ever Newry City Marathon, which will take place on bank holiday Monday 26 May.
The partnership was launched by Newry’s most famous sportsman, football legend Pat Jennings. Organised by a local committee of volunteers and athletes, events include a half marathon and three mile “fun run”. And don’t let the title dissuade you – participants can also walk if they like.
The annual Third World Run also takes place in May, on Sunday 18 May at the Ozone Complex, on the Ormeau Road in Belfast. This is the 22nd year that the event has taken place, with almost £128,000 being raised for development work in some of the world’s poorest countries.
The event kicks off at 3pm. Options include three kilometre or 10km runs, or a three kilometre walk. Entry fees are eight pounds. Those taking part are also encouraged to get sponsorship. Family tickets (for up to five people) are also available, priced at £20.
For those looking for a bigger challenge, Concern is offering two exciting new international challenges. In October, challengers will head to Ethiopia for the experience of a lifetime. The trip will begin with a visit to the Concern office, before tackling the Simien Mountains and their panoramic views. Entertainment will be provided by the hundreds of native baboons!
November’s Concern Challenge is in Nepal, with a route through some of the remotest parts of the Himalayas. Trekkers will be taken off the tourist trail, with the opportunity to experience the renowned Nepalese hospitality and culture.
